European
CO-operation
to achieve
Sustainable
Regional
development through
Tourism
was a three
year 2.5 million euro trans-national project. It
formed part of the Recite II
programme which aimed to develop inter-regional co-operation through
the establishment of local networks in each of the partner regions
to achieve shared objectives.
Three European
regions worked together to develop action plans involving
everyone affected by tourism in their rural areas - they were
Magnesia in Greece, Provincia di Avellino in Italy and the Dee
Estuary Partnership in the UK.
In each of these areas, those involved in the project included:
- Local residents
- Visitors
- Local services
- Attractions and accommodation
- Transport operators
- Food producers
- Environmental groups
- Land owners
Each area developed a number of pilot projects to test different
aspects of encouraging sustainable rural tourism. The sustainability
of the projects will be ensured by the application of Eco-Management and Audit Scheme
(EMAS).
